What kind of support for inventors is currently available?

There are two organizations in Finland specialized in facilitating inventions, Keksintösäätiö, the Foundation for Finnish Inventions, and Suomen Keksijäin

Keskusliitto KEKE ry, the Central Asosciations of Finnish Inventors. Additionally at least the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Runar Bäckström

Foundation give annual grants to inventors.

- The Foundation for Finnish Inventions offers following services: Advice, evaluating inventions, financing for protecting, researching and marketing inventions as well as otherwise facilitating the commercializing of inventions. The services are funded by Työ- ja Elinkeinoministeriö, the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

- KEKE ry is a lobbying organization that does not offer direct financial support to inventors.

- The Finnish Cultural Foundation supports invention work by giving an annual grant to the Foundation for Finnish Inventors for their general operation. They do not offer direct financial contributions to inventors either.

- The goal of the Runar Bäckström Foundation is to foster and encourage technical inventiveness. The foundation gives circa 20 annual grants. The fund was established by a large donation.

The current organizations do not offer functions that would directly support the work of inventors and securing their livelihood.

What kind of support do inventors really need?

The financial success of all creative work is uncertain. Will a book sell? Will a composition be published, recorded and played? Or will an invention be utilized in a profitable way? Will the inventor get any financial benefit or compensation?

The inventors do the hardest, most difficult part of the work. They shape an idea into a complete invention or even a complete product entirely on their own cost and at their own risk.

Crossing this desert alone is too much for many inventors and thus many inventions are left unfinished also in Finland. This a considerable economical loss to the nation. The inventors need financial support right at this critical period.

Apart from bearing these risks the inventors need to overcome to additional challenges: They need to patent the invention and manufacture a working prototype of the invention.

The funds needed are often minor but they are essential to continuing the invention work.
